Ergonomic Chair Adjustment
Have a seat like you've never had before
In order to make sure you have planned your chair in an ergonomic fashion, stand in front of the chair (with the seat facing you) and adjust the height of the seat so that it is approximately at your knee level.
Next, sit in the chair and make sure that the space between the front edge of the seat and the inner part of the knees snugly fits a clenched fist (you can try using a tennis ball, if trying to fit a fist is impractical).
Now adjust the backrest of the chair so that it supports the curve of the lower back.
Make sure to tighten the chair backrest, so that it does not give way with body weight.
During the day, readjust the chair to various body positions.
If you have reached the conclusion that your chair does not suit the task you need it to serve (too high or too low, problematic backrest etc.), you always have the option of buying a new ergonomic chair. There is a very wide range of ergonomic chairs, which can accommodate your needs of style and price: Office Chairs, Executive Chairs, Student Chairs etc. It’s worth taking a look at the range of ergonomic chairs on offer at Amazon.
A special type of ergonomic chair called the Kneeling Chair is designed such that it distributes one's body weight in a unique way, which contributes to sitting straighter, and to less muscle strain during sitting. Acquiring such a chair is a matter of personal taste. Even though most people who have tried the kneeling chair say it is very comfortable, there are still those who prefer to sit in the good old-fashioned way.
One of the most popular chairs in this category at Amazon is the Jobri Accent Kneeling Chair, which has received very good reviews.
It is also suggested to get up from your desk and chair every half hour or so, to stretch your limbs, no matter how ergonomically seated may be.
Several more ergonomic points regarding the set up of your chair (these tips should especially be taken into consideration when planning a purchase of a new chair):
- The height of the backrest should be adjustable.
- The backrest should be adjustable for movement backwards or forwards.
- The chair should have capacity for 360 degree swivel.
- The height of the seat should be adjustable.
- The seat should have a non-slip surface.
- Make sure the adjustable levers are not in a position where they might interfere with daily work.
